A trader made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was publicly declared, raising questions about potential gains made from inside knowledge of American actions.

Market Movement in Predictions

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the end of January surged in the time leading up to Donald Trump stated on the weekend that the president had been apprehended.

A particular user, which became a member recently and made four bets, all on Venezuela, earned over $nearly half a million from a modest bet of over $32,000.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Market Signals Before News Break

Trading information shows that participants assessed the probability of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the afternoon of the prior Friday.

But the odds had increased to over 10% by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the morning of the next day, indicating a sudden change in betting activity just before the social media post was made.

"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on inside information," commented a financial reform advocate.

A handful of other platform users also made tens of thousands of dollars from bets on the same outcome.

Regulatory Scrutiny Grows

Elected officials are growing concerned.

Proposed legislation put forward on the start of the week would prevent government employees from participating on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.

Industry Context

Forecasting platforms have become increasingly popular in the United States, with traders able to predict everything from sports to political events.

This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. However it has found a more favorable environment during the present political climate.

Trading on insider information is against the law in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the prediction market space.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against trading on insider information of any form."
