The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
