Nigeria's stunning new Museum of West African Art (Mowaa) has landed in the crosshairs of area political conflicts during the period it was supposed to – but did not manage – to welcome visitors to the visitors for the first time.

The Ambitious Project

The 15-acre campus is located in the heart of Benin's urban center, administrative center of the southern area of Edo – and features an excavation site and buildings planned by high-profile dual heritage architect Sir David Adjaye, best known for the Washington African American Museum that began operations in the US capital in 2016.

It has been five years in the creation – and is planned to celebrate both the heritage and the present of cultural innovation in the area famous for the Benin Bronzes, cultural objects looted from the king's palace by UK forces in the 19th Century.

Readiness and Potential

It is notable – and ahead of the planned opening, Mowaa was buzzing with staff committed to prove it is a venue that can compete with well-known cultural centers in the West.

Within preservation experts precisely unwrapped cultural items from protective packaging, examining each artifact and taking thorough notes before arranging them on walls and plinths.

Experts adjusted temperature regulation systems. In the materials science laboratory, staff members calibrated instruments meant to conserve historical items.

Financial Backing and Economic Vision

The initiative has been the brainchild of investor Phillip Ihenacho – currently Mowaa's chief executive.

"I aim us to have a substantial economic benefit on area populations in this region," he told media outlets, noting that he aspired to make Benin City "an arts hub."

Mowaa, a not-for-profit Nigerian institution, envisions itself creating over 30,000 employment opportunities and providing above $80m each year to the regional creative economy through collaborations and activities.

Financial Support and Government Issues

It has taken $25m to achieve this stage – funds gathered from various contributors, including the international partners, the UK museum and the regional authorities.

But at present the state authorities has revoked permission from under it – revoking the utilization of the land on which the building was erected.

An Edo state spokesperson clarified this was because in the early agreements it had referred to itself as Edo Museum of West African Art – and it had later dropped "Edo" from its designation.

Protests and Political Intervention

This statement came after demonstrations on the weekend, when protesters entered the campus demanding it be called the Museum of the Benin Kingdom.

A rowdy assembly harassed overseas dignitaries at the venue prior to the launch – forcing them to be escorted out under police escort.

Head of state Bola Tinubu has even stepped in to work to address the conflict, creating a special task force to manage the situation.

Governance Issues

But how has this become so politicised – and such a reputation problem?

The majority of it stems from internal conflicts at a local state level, as it was the former state leader Godwin Obaseki – whose governance concluded the previous year – who was a key supporter of the initiative.

And it looks like the administration of the current leader, a key associate of the area king, called the traditional leader, may want greater involvement in the project. The demonstrators on Sunday, for case, were calling for that the facility be positioned under the supervision of the current Oba.

The Cultural Artifacts Debate

This emphasizes the controversial matter of the cultural artifacts, one of the continent's most celebrated historical legacy.

Because even if the facility does ultimately begin operations, these objects will be conspicuously absent.

They are metal, elephant tusk and wooden carvings that once embellished the monarch's home of the Benin Kingdom before UK forces looted them in the late nineteenth century during a military operation.

Nowadays, numerous stay distributed across museums in Europe and North America -- such as the British Museum, European center and the American museum.

Repatriation Campaigns

Their homecoming has become one of the most debated conversations in the global art world. About 150 have presently been returned – and further are due to follow.

When plans for the museum in the urban center were initially revealed in the pre-pandemic era, the key players on Nigeria's art scene anticipated it would become their perfect venue – a state-of-the-art facility to exhibit them to the global audience.

But the waters were muddied some time back after the federal government stated that the Oba would be the legal custodian of returned objects – and the monarch's court pushed for a museum under the royal family's direct control, opposing the wishes of the former governor.
